alright, so...i was inspired tonight and designing a whole new website for my photography...but i need some advice. in the past ive used http://www.angelfire.com to build my websites cause it was free and pretty painless. and i am leaning more toward the free hosting route again but i wanna know if there is anything better out there.

but then im also thinking that id like this wesite to look good and be more professional, so i should get my own domain. but i dont even know where to begin. i know a ton of you have your own so maybe you can help? ill bake you cookies and shtuff ;D

orrr....

you could always buy a domain
and then have it point to an angelfire or geocities page... but you will have popups and it wont look cool...

all you need is basic html and if you dont know that... well i can help you or you can make it in front page or dreamweaver

i already made the webpage, i just need to know where to go from there as far as a place to host it and a domain name and all that. i dont really wanna go the angelfire route anymore. i want this to be more professional looking.

so id have to buy the domain name at godaddy and then buy a place to host it too? thats where i get confused hehe

the .com at godaddy i got for 6 a year

then the webhosting is monthly pmts, or you can pay it all up front :)

awsome! thanks :D

does fmlive register the domain name for you?
30th-Apr-2005 04:11 pm (UTC)
i think so
when i bought my package over a year ago all i did was enter my domain name... lol

i always buy domains at directnic.org.
most domains nowadays cost $15 a year, no matter where you buy it actually. [unless you want some fancy stuff like .name or .biz]
directonic also offers hosting for a price. i think regular price for one gig of space is about 3-5$ a month. depending on the provider, you get goodies like MySQL db's, pop accounts, and all that... it's really up to you if you want that stuff or not.
just make sure you get a provider that registers the DNS {nameserver} for you. because that's just horror to do.

Mh..I had my free website at topcities.com but it went down very often. I have my domain here: http://cms.domainfactory.de/ because it's cheap and you don't have to pay extra if the bandwidth is exceeded. (Don't kno wthough if the site is also available in english). I am very happy with it. Plus you can (I hope haven't tried it yet) put up a password so that only certain people are allowed to visit it. You can also google for providers. There are tests out there that test the offers.

hmm i cant seem to find it in english. but thanks for the info, ill look into providers some more :D

for the domain, definately use godaddy.com. I got a fucking STEAL when I got mine during their superbowl special. I have www.danaedenied.com/ for two years for $18. that's usually the cost of one year at other places.

as for where to host it, I don't nkow where.. i have a friend hosting my site. >_>

but yeah. godaddy.com is great prices and they're reliable and easy to set up
29th-Apr-2005 12:19 pm (UTC)
ok so i have to buy a domain name, and then find a hosting site to pay for too?
30th-Apr-2005 01:55 am (UTC)
Yeah If you get a .us at go daddy its like $6.00 a year.
The only crap is the hosting. i had to pay like $4.00 a month for the smallest amount of size.. Luckily now i get it for free + unlimited.

basically you pay $6 to have a name
and then $4 a month for space to hold your content.

you can use to webspace ub gives you and get a cheap domain from like yahoo to forward it to your ubspace
29th-Apr-2005 12:15 pm (UTC)
how do i go about doing that?
29th-Apr-2005 02:04 pm (UTC)
go here: http://cit.buffalo.edu/ubfs/

to turn on your UB webpage.

After that, you can FTP or SSH files to ubunix.buffalo.edu. I think you get up to 15 MB of space on UBFS.
29th-Apr-2005 07:37 pm (UTC)
oh cool.

but it says they are going to be discontinuing it?
30th-Apr-2005 02:20 pm (UTC)
They're not discontinuing UBFS. They're discontinuing an application called UBFSHome that's used for transferring files from your hard drive to your UBFS space (it doesn't work very well.)

Actually, if you're using Windows (i dunno if there's a similar kind of thing for Mac) an easier way to transfer files than FTP or SSH is by using Webfolders, if you wanna take a look at it here:
